Dr. Gürkan was graduated from the department of Psychological Services in Education and the department of Educational Administration, Supervision and Planning at Ankara University Faculty of Education in 1970. She completed her master education at the department of Psychological Services in Education in 1972. Then, she completed her doctoral education at the department of Curriculum and Instruction in 1981. She served as division superintendent and program register in the Film, Radio and Television Education Center of the Ministry of National Education. She also took courses at University of Rolla-Missouri in the USA and worked voluntarily at the Dıagnosis and Treatment Centre of Children with Special Educational Needs in Columbia between 1973 and 1976.

In 1978, Dr. Gürkan started her career at the department of Curriculum and Instruction at Ankara University Faculty of Education as a research assistant. Later, she received her title as Assistant Professor in 1985, as Associate Professor in 1987 and as Professor in 1993. She served as vice dean, head of the department of Curriculum and Instruction and assistant manager at the Institute of Educational Sciences there. Then in 2008She got retired voluntarily and served as dean of Girne American University Faculty of Education in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) between 2008 and 2011. Between 2011 and 2013, she served as a faculty member of International Cyprus University Faculty of Education in TRNC. Between 2014 and 2018, she served as a faculty member and the head of the department of Pre-school Teaching at European University of Lefke in TRNC. And then, she served at Başkent University as part time faculty member for one education term.

Dr. Gürkan has several research about curriculum development, pre-school education, curriculum for primary education, teacher education, teaching methods and principles. Also, she has been advisor for several master and doctoral thesis. She is married and mother of two children.
